OUR MISSION

The Atatürk School for Children was established in the 1980s and is managed by the American-Turkish Association of Washington DC, a 501c, tax exempt, non-profit cultural organization. The goal of the school is to provide Turkish language and culture classes for Turkish-American children so that they may retain important aspects of Turkish culture while growing up in the United States. Children learn in a fun, yet structured, environment. Light homework is assigned to reinforce classroom teachings. In addition to learning about Turkey and the Turkish language, children are able to socialize with other Turkish-American children and further develop their language skills. No religious instruction is provided at our school.

23 NISAN NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY & CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION

23 Nisan Children’s Day Celebration is a part of our curriculum. Students better learn and understand Turkish history and culture while they prepare to perform their Turkish language skills by singing and reciting Turkish songs and poems. These children participate in a global event as all the other Turkish kids in Turkey and around the World. Performing on stage also helps them improve their presentations skills and gives them confidence.

LOCATION

All classes will be held at Mclean High School, 1633 Davidson Road, McLean, Virginia, 22101. Please park at the rear of the school by the baseball fields (Gate 11). Follow the signs on the first day of class.

SCHEDULE

Classes are held Sunday mornings from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM from September 8, 2024 to May 5, 2025. Holidays are noted on the calendar, which is attached to this form and is available on www.atadc.org. Throughout the school year, we will enforce health requirements mandated by the Fairfax County School System which will be communicated to the students and their parents as needed. Please note that a parent or guardian must remain at the School while students are in class.

CLASSES AND CURRICULUM

Students, as young as 5 to 12 years old, may register by September 1, 2024.  Additional students may be accepted through September 30, 2024 provided that classes are not full. Status of classroom opening can be requested from the school administrators provided below. Students are given a proficiency test at the first day of school to properly assign them to classes. Typically, Beginner I, Beginner II, Level 1, classes are available for students based on the level of the students. Students are expected to maintain appropriate classroom behavior and follow teacher instructions. Depending upon the class sizes, we may ask for rotating parent volunteers to assist in classroom management.

BREAKS & SNACKS

Students will be allowed 1-2 breaks, depending upon class level. Breaks allow teachers to prepare for the continuing lessons, and allow students to have a snack, use the facilities and/or, time- and weather-permitting, play on the playground. Parents are responsible for providing snacks, which may only be consumed in the cafeteria or outside. Parents are responsible for cleaning up after snack time. During breaks, parents must supervise their children, whether inside or outside, at all times.

TEACHERS

The School employs well educated and highly experienced teachers to ensure students receive high-quality education.
