ATA-DC PROGRAMS

The Atatürk School for Children

The school was established in the 1980s and is managed by the American-Turkish Association of Washington DC, a 501c, tax exempt, non-profit cultural organization. The goal of the school is to provide Turkish language and culture classes for Turkish-American children so that they may retain important aspects of Turkish culture while growing up in the United States. Children learn in a fun, yet structured, environment. Light homework is assigned to reinforce classroom teachings. In addition to learning about Turkey and the Turkish language, children are able to socialize with other Turkish-American children and further develop their language skills. No religious instruction is provided at our school.

As cultural exchange through education, ATATÜRK School remains a priority for our organization. Every year, with April 23 celebrations, students showcase their talents with dances, songs, and poetry. The school provides a connection to Turkish history and culture for students and helps them to take pride in their heritage with other children and friends.

Given the evident social development in our students and their dedication, we believe this presents an excellent opportunity for our community.

We also would like to thank all the parents and our sponsors without whom this wonderful program could not have been possible.

Young Cultural Ambassadors Program (YCAP)

Established in 2017, ATA-DC’s YCAP initiative is another of our highly popular programs and in its 8th year, we had a record number of 38 participants. Open to high school students from across the United States, the program is run in a hybrid format and aims to empower youth leaders through civic engagement, volunteerism, and cultural diplomacy. Participants attend lectures by experts in a variety of fields including entrepreneurship, politics, academics, diplomacy, art as well as others. Participants also complete both individual and team projects.

YCAP runs from October through April for about six months. ATADC offers this program in a hybrid format (with a few in-person components, including the Turkish Festival) to enable broader youth participation. Most YCAP activities will take place virtually, along with a few in person activities.

The program is an amazing opportunity for those who want to spare time for volunteer community engagement and enhance communication, plus diplomacy skills.
