ATA-DC is excited to announce the Turkish Film Festival, showcasing the works of acclaimed filmmaker Reha Erdem, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. The festival will take place from September 13-15, 2024 at the National Museum of Asian Art’s Freer Gallery.

This unique event will offer an opportunity to experience Reha Erdem’s captivating films, known for their stunning depictions of the natural world and profound exploration of human psychology. The Festival will present three of his most impactful films, each followed by an engaging Q&A session with the filmmaker himself.

We are delighted to invite you to join us for this extraordinary cinematic journey. To celebrate the festival’s final screening on Sunday, September 15 at 4:00 PM, we will host a complimentary reception, generously sponsored by Ottoman Taverna.

Meet the Filmmaker: Reha Erdem

Reha Erdem is a distinguished Turkish director and screenwriter known for his innovative approach to filmmaking. In 2016, he won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival for his film Koca Dünya (“Big Big World”). Erdem’s work is marked by a distinctive blend of keen observation and minimalist storytelling.

 

Born in Istanbul in 1960, Erdem attended Galatasaray High School before pursuing history at Boğaziçi University. In 1983, he shifted his focus to film, studying at the University of Paris VIII, where he earned a B.A. in Cinema Studies and an M.A. in Plastic Arts. His formative experiences include participating in Ateliers Varan workshops in Paris in 1984, where he was introduced to direct cinema and directed two short documentaries.

 

Erdem’s debut feature film, A Ay, was released in 1988 as a French-Turkish co-production. He continued to make an impact with films such as Kaç Para Kaç (1999), İnsan Nedir Ki?/Korkuyorum Anne (2004), Beş Vakit (2006), Hayat Var (2008), and Kosmos (2010). His other works include Jin and Şarkı Söyleyen Kadınlar (2013). Erdem has written or co-written all of his films, except for İnsan Nedir Ki?/Korkuyorum Anne, where he was one of the co-writers.

In addition to his feature films, Erdem has directed short films and a theatrical adaptation of Jean Genet’s Les Bonnes. His critical examination of masculinity distinguishes him as a significant voice in contemporary Turkish cinema.
