ATA-DC Celebrates Int’l Women’s Day With an Inspiring Leadership Panel

March 8, 2025 — Washington, DC

ATA-DC honored International Women’s Day with an inspiring panel and celebration at the Textile Museum of George Washington University, welcoming over sixty attendees. Moderated by Özge Övün Sert, ATA-DC’s Secretary General and Editor-in-Chief of ATANews, the panel featured three distinguished scientists — Dr. Esma Akin (GWU Medical School), Dr. Hande Özdinler (Northwestern University), and Dr. Duygu Tosun-Turgut (UCSF). Each received ATA-DC’s annual Leadership Award for their groundbreaking contributions to research, education, and the advancement of women in STEM fields.

The two-hour discussion highlighted personal journeys, challenges, and triumphs in science and academia, as the speakers candidly shared stories about gender bias and perseverance. Their heartfelt reflections inspired both young professionals and established community members alike. The audience engaged with thoughtful questions, adding to an atmosphere of empowerment and solidarity.

Following the panel, attendees enjoyed a reception catered by Chef Aynur, complemented by handcrafted baklava from Fairfax Bakery. All proceeds from the event were donated to Bridge to Türkiye’s “Educate a Girl” initiative, supporting girls’ education in Türkiye. In her closing remarks, President Sevtap Schreffler celebrated the achievements of Turkish women worldwide, emphasizing ATA-DC’s mission to uplift, connect, and empower. The evening was a moving tribute to resilience, intellect, and the transformative power of women leading change.
